I have been getting a bit bored of those huge gatherings or meet ups we've been having. It's great fun for a while or after a long while but if I tend to hang out all the time with the exact same people I go to meet ups with, I start to get a bit bored. Somehow, I think Shook might be feeling the same so we've been avoiding the current scene of friends. Besides, there are some friends we are trying to give space to grow up and be more matured before we give in to the very strong need to put them out of our misery!!

Besides, I'm currently missing serious conversations. I mean, I get enough shallow conversations, relationship conversations, I-want-attention conversations from school. I'm surrounded by teenage angst. (Haha! This reminds me of Mac's remedy to angst. I'd like to see him try it out right now!). Anyway, as I was saying, I'm surrounded by teenage angst 8 hours in a day. I really don't need to see more of it when I go and hang out with my friends.

So last night, Shook and I went to have pizza and we invited Art and Jerome along. Art has always been a difficult person to meet so I was not too surprised to hear that he didn't want to join us. But Jerome did and after that...as I told Art, if he didn't want to go to Pizza Hut, we'll bring Pizza Hut to him. I miss that guy. He has always been my one confidante. When I first met Shook, it was Art who gave me the truth about Shook. And it was Art I trusted about Shook's characteristics. Mac told me some things too but Mac is such a fan of Shook that I was not sure whether he was being objective or not. (So now you all know what I mean when I say that I did my research). Besides, if anyone were to ask me who I am closest to among our group of guys, my first answer would be 'Art'. Art was always the first person I called when I was depressed. Once he even inevitably stopped me from driving my car into permanent oblivion. And Art was always ready to listen to me no matter when or where. Art also knows my quirks and even mood swings and weak spots for certain food.

Don't ask me at which point Art and I became such great friends. My first memory of Art was me asking him about the different possible types of dragons (which explains his knowledge of my obsession with dragons). This was after everyone was telling me that Art literally was the Game Master among us all.

Art is just one the great group of friends I have. They're all guys. I trust them more than I trust girls, honestly. Girls tend to go for power play almost immediately. When they guys don't pay attention to them, they either pout or start dissing the guys or get bitchy or they just exaggerate everything they do. I know girls like this. They just couldn't understand why the guys prefer to talk to me than to them. I know what they're thinking. They gorgeous and lively and slim. I'm fat, ugly and stupid so why do these guys still rather talk to me? My answer is I don't know. I've always been able to do this. I know how to talk to people and make them feel heard, I guess. I don't try to impose myself on them. Humility comes into it a lot. That, and being myself. Not trying too hard. So when I see things like this happen, I walk away. Now that I have Shook, it's easier to walk away. Oh, and I still have Art and Ben and Jerome. These are the guys I bother with anyway. I used to be able to count on Mac a lot too but he has Rin now so he doesn't need me around. Besides, I think he has more fun with her ;)
A lot of us would like to see our own site coming up on the first page of any search result from any search engine.

However, I found out that my page appears as a result of a search for 1) drunk malay and 2) nurhaliza chinese teresa. Huh?! What's up with that?! That's almost as bad as mac's girls on ladder search result. I wanted to add the link to his blog but I couldn't find the posting he made about it...or even if he did post an entry about it. Hmmm....

And since I've been getting a lot of hits from people looking for siti nurhaliza and the Royal Albert Hall, I suppose I could write what I've heard about the whole thing.

One thing I heard is that the Royal Albert Hall is not in the habit of inviting people to perform there. They have better things to do. So most people clamour to get a spot to perform there. And if you have a stint there on April Fool's Day, not many people are likely to take it seriously.

Another thing I heard is that not many people consider Siti Nurhaliza's performance a success because the attendance was 2,500 Malaysian people, most of which are students studying there and the rest are from the Sultan of Pahang's entourage! Some people in the entertainment industry would consider it a success if she had managed to get the Londoners to watch her show. Well, I do remember 2 British men making a statement about liking her music when they picked up her CD while they were in Malaysia and they had decided to attend the show when they found out she was going to be there.

Another thing I heard is that Siti got an interview on BBC about her show. Again, I didn't catch it myself. But my very reliable source said that Siti was asked what she thought about Britney Spears. To which she answered that she wants to establish her own image and not copy anyone else's...or something to that effect. And my only reaction is...huh?

Which brings me back again to the quality of English in our country. It scares me that our people actually go overseas with these English skills that we currently generally have. I'm not counting Sabah and Sarawak because we're generally still stuck in colonial times where language is concerned.

It's only in Sarawak where the conversation would go something like:
Person A: Tempat ya kat Limbungan Brooke kah? (That place is at Limbungan Brooke - basically means Brooke Dockyard anyway)
Person B: Kan!! Nya di Brooke Dockyard!! (No! It's at Brooke Dockyard)
Well, here, I know of people who are so used to hearing the names in English that they think you're bluffing when you tell them there's a Malay name for it too.

And another incident went:
A friend was in England for the first time. He was standing in line with a friend at a grocery store. Then, the friend who was in front of him told the lady behind the counter that he wanted Coke. Unfortunately, he said it as 'cock' not 'Coke'. Let's just say that the lady had to ask him to repeat it twice before my friend took pity on them both and quickly said 'Coke' in the correct pronounciation.

All these incidents are funny when you look at them in hindsight. But if you're ever caught in that situation, it is embarrassing.

And how did I get from search results to Coke?
When you've read enough blogs, you start to notice certain quirks. Sometimes the quirks show such a blatant and horrible example of copycatting that you don't know whether to be flattered or just pissed off.

I've read of people ranting about the same issues or even elaborating on what they've read from another blog. But when people go all out to follow the exact same topic, that really gets me to thinking. Don't they have any of their own ideas? And if they don't, shouldn't they start thinking about it?

I guess people who are more tolerant than I am can take it and chuck it aside. Me? I take things to heart because I strongly believe in my principles and in what I do. I take extreme measures when such things happen to me. I avoid the people I can't tolerate. After awhile, then I'll be able to get back to them.

But copycatting? Really...?! Get a life!
My cousin just sent me this link. He recommended it for the next time I'm in KL. How do I tell him that my sisters are sometimes scared of even being in their own house alone and that I have the most active imagination ever, even among my friends?

On the other hand, the morbid side of me finds this very interesting. Maybe I could ask my friends and Shook along instead of my sisters. My sisters would scare me to death along the way. With anyone else, I'd be too proud to show my full fears :)

Looking at the sites though, it seems to appeal more to the possibility of hauntings rather than really well known haunted places. And there are quite a few in KL and even here in Kuching. Or maybe they just don't want to push their luck.

But hey, if Americans can have tours of the Winchester manor, why can't we do something along the same lines?
I recently found this blog and thought the rantings touched on a few of the issues that has been bugging me about our Malaysian version of The Amazing Race.

However, unlike this blogger, I am not concerned with who should be the perfect host or the race tasks or the excitement level or the talking. My issues are of a slightly different nature.

I watch Explorace on and off ever since it first appeared on the screen. When I happen to catch it on, I'll sit and watch it just to see how well Malaysians deal with pressure or even with foreigners overseas. It pains me a great deal sometimes when the contestants need to ask fro help to read the instructions despite the instructions being in English and the country is Australia. It also pains me to see the contestants asking for directions in their broken English and the English speaking foreigner giving them a blank look. Most of all, it pains me to see the contestants trying to ask the Australians for help when searching for a flag on a small section of the beach and the Australians making fun of the way the request was asked.

But I do understand that these are the limitations of the contestants themselves. This is beyond the network's responsibilities. However, what is within the network's abilities to prevent are the grammatical errors that are in the sentences that appear at the bottom of the tv screen. Two episodes ago I saw the line '...managed to caught up with...'. My first reaction was "What the hell...? Oh, maybe I saw it wrong." So being a typical myopic, I actually went closer to the TV to have a proper look. Yep, the words were still there and those were the actual words.

I was horrified. I would have expected a huge network such as TV3 to be able to find someone in their crew to be able to at least spot these grammatical errors. Worst comes to worst, ask Daphne to check them. She's from Sabah. Her English ought to be good.

This was not the only mistake of this nature. I've spotted a few but this was the one that really got stuck in my head. At first, I thought, it's not too bad. After all, we are only on national TV. Then it was pointed out to me that Astro has TV3 on it and that's when my horror really set in. We're on REGIONAL TV and that's what we are showing the other countries!! There is our government making a big deal about bringing up the standard of English in the country and a national network makes these sort of errors. The pain of it all!

The other thing that annoys me about the show is the use of visual overlay. During the recap sessions, TV3 likes to have a moving background against the clips of the race. This is the most painful moment of watching the show. The scenes jump up and down and the sounds come and go. Not only can you not see what was happening (in case you had stepped out a moment and missed it), you can't even hear it either! So usually I change to another channel when this segment comes on. And sometimes...just sometimes...I get stuck on another channel which shows smoother footage.

It was brought to my attention that the overlay problem has been there ever since TV3 first started using this trick on screen. That means, quite a few years now. If that is the case, why has nobody either remedied it or just gotten rid of the usage entirely? Why torture our poor eyes and ears with it? As far as I am concerned, if you can't do it well, either try harder or don't bother at all.

One other thing that has always bugged me about Explorace is that, if you don't want the teams to be together then why ask them to come in pairs? At which point does cooperative teamwork come into the whole scenario? At the end? When the big tasks are all complete? I don't get it...

I enjoy watching The Amazing Race. For me, the best part of the show is not the race itself but the human interactions. It shows how people behave when faced with obstacles and competition, how humans react when they want something so badly that they they would stoop to the lowest possible level just to get it, how childish some people can get and how double standards set it. That's the fun part. Reaching the finish line is secondary. That's why The Amazing Race always only eliminate the last pair to reach the pit stop, and I think that's fair. It gives the show an edge, something to get excited about.

The only time I got excited about Explorace was when the Sarawakians gave up without even trying hard enough!! It was so embarrassing! I can't say I can do better but I would have thought that they could have at least tried to finish the task. Oh, the other time I enjoyed Explorace so much was when Philip and Godwin were on. They are so cool. They didn't take themselves too seriously, they had fun, they had a funny strategy which I knew from the start would have annoyed the other pair and they were just fun to watch. Their segments were the best I've ever seen. I had hoped they would make it further but we can't all get what we want.

Oh, and I did try to get through to the official Explorace website. The feedback was through the forums, which does not always guarantee your opinions being read by the producers, and I was also asked to register and then wait for a confirmation email before I can voice my opinions. Talk about trying to discourage feedback!

This is my Mac, short for Macavity. Nothing mysterious about him though. He's an open book. You know when he wants attention, when he wants food or when he just misses us. His name also explains why I get rather confused when Shook mentions Mac when we talk. Especially when we're talking about my Mac and macdyne Mac. See how confusing it can get?

This is a picture of Mac waiting at my kitchen door waiting for someone to see him there. He's also probably a little upset with me because a few minutes before I was bothering him when I took pictures of him sleeping.

On another note, CSI:NY is on tonight on Astro AXN. I'm not glued to the TV because I've watched this first episode. It's a little gruesome so I'd just rather not watch it again. However, I think the CSI appeal lies in those one-liners Gil, Horatio and now Mac like to dish out before they go to the opening credits.

I just noticed!! Way too many Macs in my life!!
My best friend who is currently living in London sent me this link. It is hilarious and quite addictive. I was supposed to go to bed 20 minutes ago but got stuck on this. Try it! It's fun!
I was driving to the grocery store tonight after sending my youngest sister to tuition and came across a red Kancil in the middle of the road near the Satok flyover. At first I thought it was my erratic night vision making the car seemed like it was just sitting there.

When I got nearer I realised it WAS just sitting there. Well, I was not able to swing around it immediately because of the oncoming traffic. While waiting for the road to clear, I was able to take a look at what was going on inside the car. My first thought was that someone had either passed out or broken down or just plain left the car there with its lights on and the engine running. The latter is, of course, the most ridiculous idea.

Anyway, when I finally did manage to get around the car, I glanced inside and saw a couple just sitting there. It was perplexing at first but then I noticed the guy looking at the girl rather seriously.

So my next thought was that it was one heck of a lovers' quarrel! I mean, it has to be for the guy to just stop the car in the middle of the road. And he even ignored the many hoots and honks from the other cars. This guy looked Malay and we all know Malay guys generally see honking as a challenge to their ego.

And if he was horny or anything like that, wouldn't he have picked a more secluded and darker place to stop at?

My sister had this idea that maybe the girl had dared him to stop in the middle of the road so he did.

I don't know and neither does it matter to me that they were there. All I can think of is that, no matter what the reason, did it never occur to them how dangerous it was to just be there like that?
I actually went to watch Sembilu 2005 last night. Normally nobody will catch me within 100 km of such a movie but last night I went at the behest of Azreen and Shook.

All I can say about that movie is that it is a Sepet celup. It tries so hard to catch the essence of Sepet but just makes it sordid somehow.

When I was watching Sepet, I could feel the love and affection overflowing between the characters. In Sembilu, I just wanted them to get a room and screw their frustrations away because it was annoying me.

Then there was the race issue. As Shook pointed out to me, in Sepet, there was never a racial issue. The only thing Orked's father had against Jason was that he was involved with some shady characters. But in Sembilu, it was an all-out where a Malay girl cannot even ever imagine going out with a Chinese boy, no matter how bright he is, no matter how good he is. The Malay guys, who take part in illegal racing, is better because they are...Malays. I mean, that's crap.

Then there's the classic Malay movie thing. Everyone was living in a huge mansion, driving the best cars, living such superb lives but they still bitch and moan and whine like babies. As far as I am concerned, you really want to feel pain, quit your job, move out of your parents' house, get your own place, pay for your own bills and join the real world. Before that happens, stop bitching about how life is so unfair! Brats!

On another scale, some people got all offended by my rats rant. Some even felt it was targetted at them. Isn't it ironic that the ones I target don't feel it but the ones I don't get all huffy? Oh geez! Imagine how I feel when I read other people's blogs and feel the pinch when they rant even if I know I did not matter in the equation while they were blogging?! My advice is simple. If you can't take it, don't dish it out...
WorldLingo.

I guess this was brought about by a few conversations I've been having with some people on the subject of learning a foreign language. I wanted to learn Navajo while I was in Michigan but I didn't have the time. So when I told Shook, his reply was simple and made a whole lot of sense. 'Why learn a new language when you don't know your own?'

And he is right! I figured with my mixed blood, I should know how to speak Malay, Arabic, Chinese and Portuguese. Out of that 4, it's only Portuguese that I never ever once attempted. So I just might learn it the very first chance I get. And best thing yet, I can practise with my relatives in West Malaysia.

Esta será a língua que seguinte eu tento aprender. É literalmente minha lingüeta de mãe. Bem, mais gostam da lingüeta de mãe da minha avó. E esta tradução pôde mesmo ser errada!

And after that, I shall try my relatives' languages. Like Norwegian and Japanese and whatever they speak in South Africa and Morocco. I think it's French, isn't it? Then for commercial uses, there's always Spanish.
I hate rats. No ifs, no when, no buts. I just hate them. Everywhere you turn, they are there, staring at you with their small beady eyes. They come in all colours; black, white, brown, yellow. They come near you anywhere and at any time. While you’re eating, walking on the road, driving, enjoying a cup of coffee, enjoying a quiet moment to yourself. This does not matter to them. They would sneak up to you and intrude on your thoughts and your conversations.

Rats are annoying creatures. They sit in their dark corners and twitch their noses waiting for you to release a nice, interesting morsel. As soon as your back is turned, they’ll snap at what is yours and claim it for their own. They’re an irritant on their own but they’ve even nastier when they’re in their groups. They sit unobtrusively but you know they’re just waiting to pounce on you. They want to make you believe they are harmless but sometimes you can feel them collecting information from you.

They make these irritating little squeaks and scamper around your heels, above your heads, behind you, beside you. When they’re among themselves, their squeaks get louder and they pretend to fear you but you just know they would destroy you if they could benefit themselves. They would probably like you to think that they are intelligent but in general, they just continue to amaze you of their absurdity. They gather in areas and squeak and squeak only to get caught in their own deviousness. Then they dare to declare themselves smarter, braver, kings.

Rats are not known for their honour. They are known to squeal over the slightest matter. They would take your things if it was easier than working for their own. They have a society of their own but keep trying to intrude on ours. They lack the social etiquette that other creatures have. They go where they’re not wanted. They annoy where they’re ignored. They will bite the hand that’s stupid enough to feed them.

Rats are nasty, self-centred, selfish creatures that think only of themselves and try too hard to be like others. They probably wish they were welcomed.

Rats are best avoided or ignored altogether. Destroying them would take too much energy considering the fact that we don’t care for them at all. Rats are sickening.

Don’t even get me started on stool pigeons.
